Overall we were very pleased with the feedback we received. This is because the audience understood our intentions in the video such as the fact we used male and female actors in our video, despite the vocal being male as we felt that this was not important, but the message behind the lyrics as it could be applied to individuals situations. Additionally the use of male and female actors lip-synching one has been used in music videos before such as Kelis' Caught Out There and was still relevant and made a creative effect.

Smack My Bitch Up - Prodigy

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, he additionally made pop videos like Madonna's "Ray of Light" and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." Before that, he got his big break with the controversial video for "​Smack My Bitch Up" by the Prodigy.

The video depicts a night out in London filmed from a first-person perspective, portraying drinking and driving, snorting cocaine, violence, vomiting, shooting heroin, a hit and run incident, fights with men, abuse of women,vandalism, nudity and a full sex scene.The protagonist takes a stripper (played by model Teresa May) home and has sex with her. As the stripper leaves with her things, the protagonist glances in the mirror, is revealed to be a woman, and collapses on the bed.This video was based on a night out that Åkerlund had in Copenhagen.



























The video is seen as controversial due it's content of drug use, violence, sexual nature and graphic imagery. Additionally the fact that the record's name and lyrical hook features the term 'bitch' made the song itself controversial too. However despite the efforts to censor or completely not show the video on television, the video actually contributed to the high amount of sales of the record as people tried to access the video. Although the song wasn't as big a commercial success as their previous singles, it gained a cult following. The music video for "Smack My Bitch Up" drew fierce criticism for misogyny, particularly from feminist groups such as the US National Organization for Women, accusing it of encouraging violence against women, despite the main protagonist being a woman. Others, however, praised the video because of the way it subverted stereotypes of domestic violence, showing that women are also abusers. Despite the controversy, the video was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards, and eventually won Best Dance Video and Breakthrough Video.

Carol Vernallis when describing her theory particularly the narrative aspect, suggests that the video is a visual response to the narrative.

 

Vernallis states that establishing shots are one of the key camera features of a music video and areused frequently throughout a music video as well as close up shots. The style of framing of the video again is quite distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics. Extreme shots also known as master shots are also very common.

 

 

In Girls and Boys lyrics definitely control the camera movement with cross cutting fit to the bar.

These videos were able to show and provided ideas that influenced our own production. However, as they are mass and we are aiming for an niche audience we have not used a consistent amount of intertextual references.

Recomended video

A music video I recommended was Take On Me - Aha. This reasoning I chose this was the fact that the song is amazing and additionally the music in terms of media skills is far ahead of its time. The video features a hand-sketched magazine, which follows with a frame by frame draw over of live action. The editing between live action and sketch is effortlessly blended, to create a memorable video, which is iconic and still impressive today.

In relation to our music video we wish to use editing on real life action through colouring of certain shots. I think this would be effective as it would significantly show a change in mood of the video, marking the moment.

I also think that Michael Jackson's Thriller is the best music video of all time. As well as being an amazing song by an amazing artist, and from an amazing album, the video has phenominal amounts of effort in various sectors such as the detailed costume and other mise-en-scene, the simple yet effective narrative, Vincent Price's awesome horror feature and iconic dance routine.

It is clear to see that there is a water theme present through the album that further extends in relation to the music of Come As You Are.  The inlay additionally consists of three photos of the band themselves to establish their identity. Additionally included is a lyric compilation of the songs featured on the album and additional songs not featured, this was the band's choice and again correlates with the water theme due to the font being presented with a 'wavy' effect. The band and the album's 'personality' is reflected through it's front and back cover art. The front cover features a three-month-old infant named Spencer Elden, the son of the photographer's friend, alone underwater with a US dollar bill on a fishhook just out of his reach. However, there was some concern because Elden's circumcised penis was visible in the image. Geffen records prepared an alternate cover without the penis, as they were afraid that it would offend people, but relented when Cobain made it clear that the only compromise he would accept was a sticker covering the penis that would say, "If you're offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile." The back cover of the album features a photograph of a rubber monkey in front of a collage created by Cobain. The collage features photos of raw beef from a supermarket advertisement, images from Dante's Inferno, and pictures of diseased vaginas from Cobain's collection of medical photos. The back cover also includes another musical intertexual reference, Cobain noted, "If you look real close, there is a picture of KISS in the back standing on a slab of beef." These images display the 'rebellious' image that the media label Nirvana, pushing the limit to create one of the most successful and iconic albums of all time.

The song we have decided upon is 'High Hopes' by Kodaline. We decided to use this song as it fit the specific genre we were trying to achieve, we aim to keep our video a narrative throughput the verses. However, on the chorus’ we will have our actors lip-synching to the words.
This is one of our possible fonts as we aim to keep our CD front cover very minimalistic, using entire saturation on the picture. The black outline of the font makes it stand out over the high key picture; we have used this saturation because typical rock bands of this niche variety would keep it simplistic due to their limited budget. Not only do we believe that it will fit the genre but it will also correspond with our logo, which is also in black and white.

The logos underneath each fit this description however, we intend to do audience research on a group of our peers to find the most effective font.
